Case Study: Bogunda Pastoral

Sixth-generation producer Lindsay Brown is Station Manager at Bogunda Pastoral, south of Prairie, North Queensland, and uses Gallagher to collect crush-side data quickly and easily for his 1,600 predominantly Droughtmaster and Limousin-infused breeding stock.

The data collected syncs to Black Box Co, enabling analysis and producing insights that support his decision-making.

Having initially used the Gallagher system to collect cattle data, Lindsay spent quite a bit of time researching different ways to analyse the data, before settling on using Black Box.

“Nothing really came close to the Black Box system, which we continue to use to this day to get the best value out of the data we’ve been collecting,” Lindsay said.

“The Gallagher hardware is great for collecting data and works hand-in-hand with Black Box.”

Another benefit of using Gallagher and Black Box for Lindsay’s operation is having more of the team involved in the process.

By adopting a system that is more accessible for the wider team, Lindsay said he avoids double handling data, and can upload animal data as soon as it’s collected, rather than waiting until after a full round of mustering.

“Now Gallagher has done the integration with Black Box, it’s become very simple to hit the sync on the TWR-5,” he said.

“That will automatically upload the data to the Black Box cloud, and then within five to 10 minutes, you’re viewing that mob you’ve just processed in the yards and analysing the data on the screen.”

The continuous updates and crush-side system improvements from Gallagher and Black Box have made a big difference for Lindsay’s business.

“I would recommend this system to any cattle operation, whether they are just starting out on their data collection journey or have been doing it for years and are looking to upgrade their equipment,” he said.

“The benefits and possibilities to your business from collecting data on the cattle herd is endless, and Gallagher and Black Box provides an easy-to-use, easy-to-learn system that is integrated from crush-side collection to analysis on the computer.”
